2.8 Survivors and Substance Use

This section looks at the issues for domestic violence survivors who are also experiencing problematic use of substances. It sets out the research on substance use and the needs of survivors raising the issue of the separation of both practice and policy in these areas. This can mean that for survivors who may have multiple and complex needs as a result of experiencing domestic abuse and their use of substances do not access the services they need or end up in an inappropriate and unsafe service. This section also highlights how substance misuse services can begin to work with their service users who are also domestic violence perpetrators.

It may be useful to also see the information in Section 4.1A which covers children affected by domestic violence and has a subsection 'Specific issues – substance use'
