7.3 Drug and Alcohol Agencies

Research from the UK and the USA consistently shows that survivors of domestic violence are over-represented in drug and alcohol treatment populations. Research also shows that survivors have high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health support needs. This has implications for service delivery in terms of substance misuse treatment effectiveness and points to the need to promote safe services for survivors with problematic substance use. This requires policies and procedures to address the needs of survivors and perpetrators (and their children) who are accessing drug and alcohol services.

It is also recommended to refer to section 2.8 which covers survivors and substance use.
